Leading up to 2022 Roma Cup there was some success for local stables last Saturday. Of note was that Charleville based trainer Shave Iverson qualified Mori’s Press for the Country Stampede final when his horses quinellad the qualifier at Blackall. Brooke Richardson had the winning ride while Sophie Wilcock had to be content with second on Wall Street Tycoon. It was day of placings for Sophie riding 2 seconds and 2 thirds on the program. Roma trainers had some placed runners with Real Hussey (Ben Waldron) second, Curic (Rebecca Kirwan) second and Pharaohsphere (Scott Rodgers) third. Good to see a Maiden win for the consistent Short Takes as part of a winning double for jockey Anna Bakos.
In the TAB meeting at Emerald, the Craig Smith stable had a winner in the Open Company race when Last Armageddon led all the way and in doing so completed a winning treble for leading bush jockey Ashley Butler. Mark Patterson who is now based back in Roma won the 1600 metre restricted race with the very consistent Phylave, as part of the Butler winning treble.
The Roma Turf Club has received 134 nominations for its Cup Day which ranks with the highest ever number of nominations. Interesting to see last year’s winner of the Royal on 99 Roma Cup Tears of Love from the Matt Kropp stable nominated again to attempt to give the Toowoomba trainer 6 cups in the last 7 years. The Kropp stable also has Bernie’s Tiger nominated. Among the other Cup nominations are Jochberg – winner of his last 4 starts on the Bassett Park sand, as well as The Carpenter, Palate and Nick the Skip who have already qualified for the Country Cups challenge final.
The Country Stampede qualifier sees former winner VJ Day and Hard Stride engaged, along with Han Dynasty, Halycon House and Menindee who have already qualified for this year’s final while Charleville trainer Shane Iverson will be hoping to qualify Wall Street Tycoon with a win on Saturday. Whatever the outcome the Roma Turf Club is looking at capacity 12 horse fields for all races.
