The Roma Turf Club announced at the Xmas meeting some of the 2021 year highlights.
The club was pleased to announce that over the 10 meetings for the year (9 Roma Turf Club plus the Roma Picnics) a total of $720,000 in prize money was paid out to industry participants.
The Downs Country premiership awards for the 2020/2021 racing year were presented on Saturday at the Macca’s Xmas race day and winners of the awards were as follows;
Leading trainer – Craig Smith with 16 winners from Wayne Baker and Pat Webster on 14.
Leading jockey – Anna Bakos (currently out injured) with 22 wins from Dan McGilvray 15. It was also good to see veteran jockey Ross Tilley on the list with 7 wins.
Horse with the most wins – John Patterson’s Master of the Turf with 5 wins, 2 seconds and 2 thirds. Hocked from the Craig Smith stable with 5 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third. Country Cups Stampede winner VJ Day had 4 wins for the St George based Pat Webster stable.
This years Country Cups challenge winner was Dalby trained Rather Salubrious for the David Reynolds team.
The inaugural Fashions from Afar winner Shannyn Hopkins (NAB Roma and Rockhampton) helped organise the 2021 Roma Cup fashions competition while the male winner Lennie Heath (Mt Perry) also claims some Roma based relatives.
The last 2 months have proved very busy and exciting for the Roma Turf Club who are now looking forward to partnering with the MRC, Racing Queensland and the Roma Picnics to have a new improved Stewards Room. Jockeys Room to specifically cater for the increasing number of female jockeys.
Good to the Scott Rodgers team rack up a double on Saturday. In particular the win of Eil ‘N’ All in the Barry Richardson Memorial Maiden. Veteran jockey John Rudd also had a winning double and St George trainer Pat Webster dodged the Surat floodwaters and came via Mitchell to score QTIS bonuses with Leica Special.
