Here at the Roma Turf Club, we’re getting very excited about the 2023 XXXX Roma Cup Calcutta and invite you to join us at the Club Hotel on Cup Eve, Friday 17/11/2023.
Along with your chance to “buy” a runner in the 2023 Club Hotel Roma Cup in the Calcutta, you’re sure to be entertained with our special guest speakers in Gerard Daffy and Rob Luck.
Gerard is the voice every punter knows and has plenty of tales to tell! From training greyhounds at age 12 (without a licence!) to penciling for bookies at age 16, to pioneering the corporate bookmaker phenomenon in Australia more than 3 decades ago, “Daff” has seen more than most, and the “Godfather of Sports Betting” has graciously accepted our invitation to share his world of incredible experiences as the leading identity for many years in Sports Betting as well as providing his unique take on life with “Gerard’s Life Lessons”.
Rob is another voice familiar to racing fans as the co-host of RadioTAB’s long-running Country Racing show “Bush Beat”. For more than 17 years, Rob has rounded up the stories and the winners from ‘the dry and dusty outback tracks to the racetracks by the reef’ and continues to share his passion for Country Racing every Tuesday on the radio. Rob has experienced all sides or racing – as a club president, as a race caller, and as an owner, with a love of racing dating back to the legendary Eyeliner.
Tickets to the 2023 XXXX Roma Cup Calcutta are just $30, or you can purchase the “Club Pack” for $40 – giving you entry to the Calcutta as well as one $10 ticket for the Calcutta draw.
HOW DOES A CALCUTTA WORK?
Now we know there might be some people who have never attended a Calcutta or aren’t quite sure how it all works…We’re glad you asked!
THE TICKET DRAW
Tickets are $10 each and are available on the night, or you can pre-purchase 1 ticket with your entrance ticket. All proceeds from the ticket sales go into the prize pool. The more tickets that are sold, the greater the starting prize pool.
At the Calcutta, a ticket is drawn for each runner in the Club Hotel Roma Cup. If your ticket is drawn out, you become “the Drawer” and “own” that horse ahead of the auction stage! Once all of the horses are drawn, then the fun begins with the auction.
Each horse will be auctioned, and everyone at the Calcutta has the opportunity to bid for each horse. You can bid on your own, or you might like to pool resources with others at your table and form a syndicate. When a horse sells in the auction, “the Drawer” gets 50% of the sale price, and the remaining 50% goes into the ever-growing prize pool. If “the Drawer” wants a chance to win the prize pool with the horse they drew, they must buy their horse in the auction. If they buy their own, they pay only HALF the ‘bidded value’ which goes into the prize pool. The highest bidder in the auction stage becomes the new owner of that horse. The fiercer the bidding, the bigger the prize pool in the end! Successful bidders must pay for their horses on the night – Cash and EFTPOS facilities will be available.
AFTER THE RACE
After the running of the Club Hotel Roma Cup on Saturday 18/11/2023, the prize pool (consisting of all ticket sales plus fifty per cent of auction proceeds) is divided as follows:
1st – 60%
2nd – 20%
3rd – 10%
10% to be donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service – Queensland Section (RFDS) as part of the community partnership with Racing Queensland’s Country Cups Challenge to help raise vital funds for regional, rural, and remote communities.
