The Roma Turf Club sends an invitation to all locals to wind down from the hurdy/gurdy of the Roma Cup and spend a relaxing day at the 2022 Macca’s Xmas races this Saturday at Bassett Park.
Since the Roma Cup there has been plenty of interest in the racing scene for Western connections. The finals of the Country Stampede and the Country Cup last Saturday providing highlights.
Former St George based trainer Pat Webster continued his remarkable success at the higher level when Chinchilla owned Dynamic Verse stormed home to emulate the feat of the ill fated VJ Day from 2021. Former Country apprentice jockey Angela Jones had the winning ride. In what proved a gala day for the Webster team as well as the win at Doomben, there was success with Galactus at Goondiwindi and great to see Patented return to the winners circle at Nanango.
With the spotlight on the city local trainers did not have a lot of starters however Rogue Star (Ben Waldron) 2nd and Pharoahsphere (Scott Rodgers) 4th at Goondiwindi were the best of the locals.
Former Charleville jockey Les Tilley again tasted success in the Country events in the city winning the RFDS Country Cup aboard former Birdsville Cup winner Echo Point.
In a good post script to Roma Cup jockey Gary Geran who was aboard VJ Day in the Stampede qualifier when he collapsed after the race, chose not to ride in the Maiden the last race on the program but his mount team Keenzap trained by Craig Smith and ridden by Geran was able to break his Maiden status the following Saturday in Toowoomba.
