Battle of the Bush

There’s plenty of excitement building around the Roma Turf Club this winter, with local trainer Ben Waldron giving the Maranoa plenty to cheer about ahead of the 2026 Battle of the Bush Final.

Over one huge weekend on the country racing circuit, Waldron qualified two horses for the final, an achievement rarely seen in Queensland racing. Reigning champion Peshwa won the qualifier at Quilpie before stablemate Ka Bling backed it up the following day at Longreach, securing another place in the final for the Roma stable.

For most trainers, qualifying one horse for the Battle of the Bush is a major achievement. To qualify two horses in the space of 24 hours has put the Roma stable firmly in the spotlight heading into one of country racing’s biggest events.

The Racing Queensland Battle of the Bush series features 16 regional qualifiers across the state before culminating at Eagle Farm on Tattersall’s Tiara Day on June 27, where connections race for a share of the $200,000 prize pool. The final has become one of the highlights of the Queensland racing calendar, showcasing country trainers, jockeys and horses on a metropolitan stage.

Roma Turf Club members will also receive 50% off access to the club’s suite at Eagle Farm for Tattersall’s Tiara Day and the Battle of the Bush Final, giving local racing supporters the opportunity to experience the Group 1 race day atmosphere while supporting Western Queensland racing.

Back home, the Roma Turf Club Winter Carnival is preparing for another strong season, with more than $300,000 in prize money across four major race days throughout winter. The carnival begins with the Rugby Races on June 20 before continuing with Cities Race Day, Families and Fillies, and St John’s Race Day later in the season.

For many in the region, the winter carnival is more than just racing. It’s a chance to catch up with friends, support local events and enjoy a proper country day out. And with Roma connections heading to the Battle of the Bush Final in strong form, there’s an extra layer of interest around the track this season.
