Country Cups Challenge

What a weekend for Bassett Park based trainers and the Roma Turf Club. The announcement of a partnership between Racing Queensland and the RFDS for this year’s Country Cups challenge was released to the media on Friday with the Royal on 99 Roma Cup being the last chance to qualify for the final on the 3rd of December worth $200,000 at Doomben.

On the racetracks on Saturday, Roma based trainers provided 3 winners at TAB meetings, which included a 2 meeting trifecta for the Ben Waldron stable, the stable won with Hangry and Palate at Springsure with Roma based jockeys Liv O’Donnell and Sophie Wilcock riding one winner each, then at Dalby Cup TAB meeting Hannah Richardson rode Real Hussey to an impressive 6.5 length win. Whilst at Morven the Waldron stable came close to a 3 track triumph when stable newcomer Rogue Star finished second behind Early Plea.

The Craig Smith stable also had a winner at Dalby with Gary Geran riding Tell the World to an emphatic win when well-supported favourite in the Maiden, Liv O’Donnell made it a winning double at Springsure with the win on Under Par for her stable boss. The only downer for the Smith team was when Hezhome finished second in his attempt to qualify for the Country Stampede final, he was defeated by the Bevan Johnson trained Han Dynasty who now goes into the rich final. The other local stable TAB winner was for trainer Joe Halpin when Package won the 2000 metre benchmark 60 at Gatton, ridden by well known apprentice Lilli Barr, it was a great result for the Roma hobby trainer.

At the Downs Country meeting at Morven on Saturday, apprentice Sarah Robbins continued her run of recent Cup wins when she won on the Charleville trained Tango Tino in the Cup Feature. Jockey Brooke Richardson rode a winning double on the program with Early Plea and Cadouin but had a sad end to the day when her Cup ride race favourite Lubuk broke down during the running of the race. The Shane and Kim McGovern combination tasted success in the Maiden with Max “n” Mat scoring a narrow.

Meetings this weekend are scheduled for Cunnamulla, Taroom (Cup Meeting) and a TAB meeting at Longreach for the Cup.

As we draw closer to the Roma Cup the program seems to be really taking shape.
