Easter Racing Bring Bumper Crowds and a New Track Record

A bumper crowd was treated to some great weather and exciting racing on Easter Saturday at Bassett Park for the Roma Turf Club’s XXXX Easter race meeting.

Racing commenced with the White Claw maiden plate, with Gympie trainer Glenn Richardson making the long trek west with Moroccan Moon finding the Roma sand surface to her liking, winning the first race in a time of 59.23 seconds for the 1000 metre journey. Jockey Nathan Evans quickly took Moroccan Moon to the lead from the wide barrier and was never headed, despite the runner-up Gutho challenging in the home straight only to go down by a head in a close photo finish, and The Uprising held out Queen’s Arms out for third a further 1¾ lengths back.

Catalyse continued his love affair with Bassett Park making it 3 wins from 3 starts at Roma for local trainer Wayne Baker, who took the training honours for the day with a stable double. Jockey Amy Graham took the gelding to the lead soon after the start of the Hyoketsu Lemon QTIS Class 1 and always looked to have the race in her keep, holding off Sequacious by 1¼ lengths with Kunnese a further 1½ lengths away in third place in a time of 51.83 seconds for the 900m sprint.

The Hahn 3.5 Open Plate was won by Capital Reign for Toowoomba trainer Mark Goodwin and jockey Shannon Apthorpe. Keen Zap, Capital Reign and Coat Of Arms put on plenty of speed soon after the start before Apthorpe dropped the field just before the home turn to go on to win by 1¼ lengths from Coat Of Arms with 2023 Battle Of The Bush winner Art By Concorde running on strongly to finish third a further 2¼ lengths away. Capital Reign’s slick time of 51.41 seconds broke the Bassett Park 900 metre track record, highlighting how well the Bassett Park track bounced back from the wet weather leading into the meeting. Roma Turf Club co-president Peter Flynn paid tribute to the Bassett Park staff and club members who got the track ready to race for Saturday’s meeting, adding “ it was a great day of racing before a wonderful crowd and fantastic atmosphere. I wonder how many racetracks in Australia would have had a track record broken after 6 inches or 150 millimetres of rain in the five days leading to the races.”

Nathan Evans took riding honours for the day with a winning double, adding to his race 1 victory by taking out the Bob Ashney Memorial Open handicap aboard The General for Roma trainer Craig Smith. Unrestricted set a hot pace early but was soon headed by Deference and stablemate The General, who then skipped clear rounding the home turn. Evans kept an eye on the riderless-Parko who had dislodged apprentice Tom Orr just after the start and came away to win by 1½ lengths from Deference with a rare dead-heat declared for third place as the judge was unable to split the Ben Waldron stablemates Real Hussey and Peshwa.

They say that the racing game can be a rollercoaster as apprentice Tom Orr discovered, luckily taking no ill effect from coming off Parko at the start or race 3 to then winning race 4 just 35 minutes later. 26-year-old Orr only commenced race riding at the beginning of March and after winning aboard the Pat Webster-trained Silvanna’s Song at the Roma Picnics a week ago, he again quickly took the mare to a winning lead and was never headed, defeating Bugden by 3¾ lengths with Club Roller a ½ length away third stopping the clock at 1:12.67 for the 1200 metres.

The day’s racing concluded with the XXXX/Club Hotel Class 3 plate with the Wayne Baker-trained Limited Reality winning for jockey Brooke Richardson. Tom Orr tried to replicate his previous race tactics by quickly jumping to the front on Transceltic, but Richardson was able to take the lead just before the home turn and held off Transceltic by a neck with Lip Sip Suk 5¼ lengths away third in a time of 1:12.05 for the 1200 metres.

Mr. Flynn also thanked XXXX for their generous sponsorship of the meeting to provide free entry for the big crowd, as well as congratulating MPK and Santos who also joined in the Easter spirit to provide the free family entertainment, with the waterslide, jumping castle, face painting and ice creams a big hit with the little racegoers.
