It’s all about the Sash at Rugby Race Day

Fashionistas across the Maranoa and beyond are eagerly anticipating the Roma Turf Club’s annual Rugby Race Day later this month as a rare opportunity to break out their Winter finery for Fashions On The Field.

Bassett Park is set to explode on June 22nd with a feast of Football, Furlongs and Fashions as the Roma Echidnas host the Condamine Cods in their Risdon Cup A Grade clash, complemented by the Roma Turf Club’s 6-race programme racing for $115,000 in prizemoney. R.T.C. Fashions co-ordinators say competition is likely to be fierce given the fantastic prizes on offer from St Hilda’s School Gold Coast and Brennorrs Roma for the Ladies Classic and Contemporary categories as well as the Best Dressed Male.

Emma Scodellaro, the creator of the worldwide social media platform ‘It’s All About The Sash’ on both Facebook and Instagram @itsallaboutthesash, is both a Fashions On The Field competitor and judge, as well as a racing ambassador and author, and has some handy hints for those preparing to take to the catwalk on Rugby Race Day. Emma says the first ‘must haves’ are confidence, a positive attitude, and a big smile! She adds with the changing of the seasons and cooler temperatures, fashions tend to be more tailored and choose heavier fabrics in darker colours like burgundy, dark green, brown, or burnt orange. Closed toe shoes or boots are a must, and accessories like gloves, hosiery, the right clutch or bag, and jewellery and brooches can take an outfit to the next level and may be that one element that really wows the judges. Emma says don’t be tempted to bring out a straw hat if it’s an unseasonably warm autumn day – for Autumn and Winter fashions, think felt, wool and leather for millinery designs at this time of the year.

Gents should also choose heavier fabrics like Wool and Tweed in darker colours like navy, burgundy, brown, dark green, or mustard. Your look may be a two or three-piece single-breasted suit or a combination of separates, teaming a sports jacket with contrasting pants, trousers, or chinos. Waistcoats are an option, and dress shoes or boots combined with accessories like a pocket square, lapel flower, tie pin or tie bar, fob watch or cuff links, or even a cane can make your outfit ‘pop’ for the judges.

Emma’s final tip is ‘just have fun when you’re up on the stage’, and she asks participants to please tag @itsallaboutthesash and #itsallaboutthesash on your social media posts for a chance to be featured in IATTS’s socials.

Roma Turf Club co-president Peter Flynn said the club is anticipating a huge crowd on June 22ndwith plenty of interest from race goers seeking early-bird tickets, and around 300 Rugby players taking part in the 5 matches ranging from the GPS 16A’s between Ipswich Grammar and Nudgee to the Roma Echidnas, Condamine Cods, St George Frillnecks, Chinchilla River Rats, and the Western Wanderers/North (Toowoomba Bears) ladies game. Mr Flynn added “with so much rugby action and the enhanced Fashions On The Field competition to squeeze into the day, the first race will be at 11:20am. Bars will open at 11:00am and then to round it all out, we have The 78 Sound performing at our After Party until late.”
