Menindee makes new track record

2021 Easter Races at Roma

A very busy and hectic week for the Roma based trainers and Turf Club committee and volunteers. The effort to be able to get the washed out Cunnamulla program to go ahead at Bassett Park on Sunday following the 17 mm of rain on Saturday night was a great effort.

On the racing scene, the success started last Tuesday when the Craig Smith stable was victorious with Tell the World at the Rockhampton TAB meeting. On Saturday the prestigious Emerald 100 meeting went ahead with the Joe Halpin trained Package just being touched out finishing second in the feature race, the Smith stable also finished second with the promising Country Boyz in the Maiden. Former Charleville trained galloper Phylave was successful on the program for trainer Mark Patterson.

The Sunday meeting featured an outstanding 7 race program with the Wayne Baker/Amy Graham combination headlining the program with a winning treble including Menindee who broke the 1000 metre track record with an outstanding 7 length win in benchmark 55, the other Baker stable winners were Bubble Bath in the Maiden and Buddie Ollie in the benchmark 45.

Local jockey Sophie Wilcock had a winning double on Charleville trained pair Nick the Skip and Gazzman. Have saddle will travel jockey Paul Hamblin completed a winning weekend double when after riding a winner at Emerald on Saturday he teamed with the Craig Smith stable to win the benchmark 55 and grab the extra QTIS prizemoney. Not to be outdone on the travel front jockey Brooke Richardson, based in Barcaldine rode a winning double at Cloncurry on Friday at a TAB meeting and then travelled to Roma on Sunday and won the Open Company 1640 metre race on Jochberg, who has now recorded 4 wins from his last 4 starts on the Bassett Park.

This Saturday if the weather gods stay kind the Maranoa Diggers Race Club will host its annual Booringa Cup day of races.
