A number of western-trained horses headed to meetings over the weekend however the spate of cancelled meetings due to weather saw the Goondiwindi club have to abandon their meeting.
The spotlight centred around the Thangool Cup meeting and Roma based jockey Liv O’Donnell tasted success in the Maiden on the Charleville trained galloper Gazzman. Taroom based owner/trainer Rodney Hay was successful in winning the Cup with Galapagos ridden by Tasha Chambers while another of the Hay owned team Radipole, trained by Craig Smith finished third. It was a frustrating weekend for the Smith team with Art by Concorde running second in the Benchmark 65 at Thangool and Nevrom Lion finishing 3rd in a Class 1 in Toowoomba.
The Bedourie Cup followed on from Birdsville and Darwin based trainer Phillip Cole was able to take out the Cups double with Saccharo following on his Birdsville win with his win in the Bedourie feature. Saccharo was ridden by Miles-based apprentice Sarah Robbins giving her a first feature race win.
This Saturday the Downs Country spotlight heads to Morven for the Cup in a 6 race $67,500 program.
