Roma stables in form leading up to Rugby Race Day

As the Maranoa’s racing fans count down to the Roma Turf Club’s annual Rugby Race Day on June 22nd, local stables have been in good form over the last couple of weeks, winning everywhere from Rockhampton to Cunnamulla and Quilpie to Burrandowan.

Roma trainers plundered nearly half the card at the Cunnamulla Anzac Day meeting with Wayne Baker’s Parko qualifying for the rich Battle Of The Bush Final in Brisbane next month by winning the 1200 metre Open Plate, with Rebecca Kerwin’s Miss Hoff running third. Baker combined with jockey Tim Brummell for a winning treble at Cunnamulla, with Para Park Makeup taking out the 1000 metre Class B and Legislate breaking through at his sixth race start to win the 1200 metre Maiden Plate.

While Craig Smith’s 2023 Battle Of The Bush winner Art By Concorde could only place fourth behind Parko in the Cunnamulla qualifier, the Roma conditioner was successful in the QTIS Benchmark 60 of 1400 metres with Lip Sip Suk giving apprentice Dylan Bennett his second win of the day.

Following his fast-finishing third placing in the $150,000 Capricornia Yearling Sale 2YO Classic at Rockhampton in April, the Craig Smith-trained Acedrod returned to Rocky’s Callagan Park on May 2nd to win the QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden of 1200 metres with Les ‘Bubba’ Tilley aboard. Stablemate The General could only place sixth in the 1300 metre Class 6 that day at Rockhampton but turned that form around winning the 1586 metre Quilpie Cup last Saturday. Smith and stable apprentice Samantha Zoljan took half the card at Quilpie, with Lip Sip Suk making it three wins in a row by taking the 1350 metre Benchmark 55 and stable favourite Country Boyz winning the Benchmark 60 of 1200 metres.

Not to miss out on the Roma trainers winning run, Scott Rodgers made a successful trek to the South Burnett Saturday May 11th to the annual Burrandowan Picnic meeting with Scottish Farmer breaking through for his maiden victory at just his second start since joining the stable, taking out the QTIS Maiden Plate of 1175 metres defeating Toowoomba visitors Shotgun Sixtyfour and Vitthal.
